Reina Ueda Joins The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 as a Mysterious New Character

The Apothecary Diaries is bringing another familiar anime voice into its world.

Reina Ueda, the voice behind Kanao Tsuyuri in Demon Slayer, has joined the cast of Season 3, where she will portray Bai Niangniang.

And judging from the character's description, Maomao may have another mystery on her hands.

A woman surrounded by rumours

Bai Niangniang is described as a mysterious maiden with pale skin, white hair and crimson eyes. Her unusual appearance has already become the subject of rumours within the story.

For Maomao, however, rumours involving something strange are rarely just rumours.

The new character arrives as the story moves into another complicated chapter following the events surrounding the Shi clan's rebellion.

Maomao Has More Problems to Deal With

Maomao's return to the pleasure district doesn't exactly mean life has become peaceful.

An apparently ordinary breakfast at the Verdigris House gives her reason to suspect that something isn't quite right, setting the stage for another investigation.

Meanwhile, Jinshi is dealing with the consequences of revealing his true identity as the emperor's younger brother.

With the story expanding beyond the rear palace, Maomao's knowledge of medicine, poison and human behaviour is likely to become just as important as ever.

Reina Ueda joins a returning cast that includes:

Ueda's addition is particularly notable for anime fans who know her from Demon Slayer, although her résumé also includes roles such as Ariel in Mushoku Tensei.

Season 3 Is Getting Bigger

The third season isn't simply returning to the same setting.

The upcoming story is set to take Maomao and Jinshi beyond the familiar environment of the rear palace, while new characters and political complications continue to expand the world.

The first cour of Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on October 2, 2026.

A new theatrical film, The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress' Treasure, is scheduled to arrive in Japanese cinemas on December 11, 2026.
