Maomao is back where she started.
At least, that's what it looks like.
After the chaos surrounding the Shi Clan rebellion, the latest chapter of The Apothecary Diaries brings Maomao back to the pleasure district and into a much quieter routine.
But quiet does not last long around Maomao.
Season 3 begins with a strange breakfast, a worrying message from Loulan and a mystery that could be connected to something much bigger than a simple meal.
Back to the Pleasure District
Maomao is no longer working as the rear palace's food taster.
With the events surrounding the Shi Clan rebellion settled, she has returned to her life as an apothecary in the pleasure district.
For Maomao, that should mean getting back to familiar surroundings.
She knows the area.
She knows the people.
And, most importantly, she can once again spend her time doing what she actually enjoys: dealing with medicine, poisons and unusual problems.
But the first episode of Season 3 quickly makes it clear that Maomao's new routine is not going to remain ordinary.
Jinshi Has a Much Bigger Problem
While Maomao has returned to the pleasure district, Jinshi's position has changed dramatically.
He has publicly revealed that he is the Emperor's younger brother and is now formally involved in state affairs.
That means his problems are no longer limited to palace rumours and personal complications.
He now has responsibilities that affect the entire country.
And there is one particular warning he cannot ignore.
Before everything surrounding the Shi Clan came to an end, Loulan entrusted Jinshi with what appears to be a warning about a disaster threatening the nation.
Now Jinshi is left trying to understand exactly what it means.
Then Maomao encounters the locusts.
An Ordinary Breakfast Becomes Suspicious
At the Verdigris House, Maomao and Chou'u are served boiled locusts for breakfast.
It sounds bizarre.
But for Maomao, unusual food is rarely just unusual food.
After Chou'u takes a bite, he says something that immediately catches Maomao's attention.
And suddenly, the episode has a mystery.
The title of the episode is “Locusts”, making the insects more than just an unusual breakfast choice.
Maomao's greatest strength has always been her ability to notice details that other people ignore.
A strange taste.
An unusual reaction.
A seemingly insignificant comment.
Any of them can become the first piece of a much larger puzzle.
Why the Locusts Matter
The interesting part is that the episode's preview does not reveal exactly what Chou'u notices.
That keeps the central mystery intact.
What we do know is that Maomao's attention is drawn to something after the meal, while Jinshi is separately dealing with the ominous warning about a possible national disaster.
Those two storylines immediately create an interesting contrast.
Maomao is looking closely at something happening right in front of her.
Jinshi is trying to understand a threat that could affect an entire country.
The question is whether those seemingly separate problems are actually connected.
A tiny clue may be the beginning of a much bigger mystery.
Maomao Isn't Really Starting Over
At first glance, Season 3 could have been an opportunity to reset everything.
Maomao leaves the palace.
Jinshi takes on a new role.
The Shi Clan conflict is finished.
The characters could simply move on.
Instead, the premiere immediately reminds viewers that the consequences of the previous story are still hanging over them.
Maomao's return to the pleasure district doesn't erase what she experienced.
And Jinshi's new political position means the dangers surrounding him are arguably even greater.
The two characters have moved into different parts of the world, but the story still keeps them connected through the larger mystery developing around them.
A New Season, A Bigger Mystery
The Apothecary Diaries has always worked best when it turns something ordinary into something suspicious.
A meal.
A medicine.
A piece of jewellery.
A strange illness.
A missing object.
Season 3 begins with exactly that kind of setup.
Maomao is surrounded by something as ordinary as breakfast when one small comment gives her a reason to pay attention.
At the same time, Jinshi is carrying a warning that sounds far more serious than anything happening at the Verdigris House.
That combination gives the new season an immediate mystery without needing to explain everything at once.
And Maomao is exactly where she wants to be
Away from the palace, Maomao can once again focus on medicine and the strange cases that interest her.
Unfortunately for her — and fortunately for everyone watching — trouble has a habit of finding her.
The first episode of Season 3 appears ready to prove that the location may have changed, but Maomao's instincts certainly haven't.
The Mystery Begins Again
Season 3 opens with Maomao returning to the pleasure district, Jinshi stepping deeper into state affairs and a strange warning hanging over the country.
Then comes the locusts.
For now, the episode is leaving the most important part of the mystery unanswered:
What exactly did Chou'u notice?
Whatever the answer is, Maomao is unlikely to ignore it.
And if The Apothecary Diaries has taught viewers anything, the smallest clue can eventually become the biggest problem.
