Episode 1170: Luffy vs. Scopper Gaban
The episode centers on a clash between Luffy and Scopper Gaban — Gol D. Roger's former right-hand man, introduced not long ago as having spent the last two decades quietly living on Elbaph, married to Ripley with a son, Colon. Seeing one of Roger's own crew step directly into Luffy's path is exactly the kind of connective tissue this arc has been building toward since the Straw Hats first reached the giants' island.
This episode continues the anime's return from its earlier three-month break, which picked back up on April 5 with the crew's arrival on Elbaph. It's also worth noting the newest addition to the cast: Yuichi Nakamura was recently confirmed as the voice of Loki, debuting alongside the rest of the Knights of God lineup — a signal that Loki's role is about to become far more central than a side character.
What's Coming in Episode 1171
The preview for the next episode is already out, and it's positioned as a turning point. Expect Loki to start actually using his Devil Fruit power on screen — something the story has been building anticipation for — alongside the fallout of everything just set up between Luffy, Gaban, and the wider cast now converging on Elbaf.
Why This Arc Matters
Elbaf isn't a side quest. It's where Oda has been steering the story since the end of the Egghead arc, and every episode so far has been laying track for a much bigger confrontation ahead — one that ties back to Imu, the World Government's hidden history, and the "D." clan's connection to the giants. Gaban's appearance alone opens the door to details about Roger's crew that the anime hasn't shown before.
If you've been holding off on catching up, this is a good week to jump back in — the pieces currently on screen are ones that are going to matter for a long time.
