Spoiler warning: This post contains details from Hunter x Hunter Chapter 420.
The latest Hunter x Hunter chapter has arrived, but fans are already asking the same question:
When is Chapter 421 coming?
Chapter 420 was published in the September 7 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, marking the end of the latest ten-chapter run that began in June after roughly a year and a half without a new chapter.
And unlike previous breaks, there is currently no confirmed date for Chapter 421.
Hisoka Finally Meets Tserriednich
Chapter 420, titled "Encounter," delivers one of the biggest moments of the latest batch.
Hisoka finally appears and comes face-to-face with Tserriednich, the Fourth Prince of Kakin.
The encounter has immediately become one of the most talked-about parts of the chapter because both characters are among the most unpredictable figures in the entire series.
Tserriednich has been developing his Nen abilities at an alarming speed, while Hisoka is always difficult to read.
Putting the two in the same scene creates an enormous amount of tension without needing an actual fight.
The question now is what happens if their meeting escalates.
Chapter 420 Ends Another Run
The latest chapter brings the current publication stretch to 10 consecutive chapters, starting from Chapter 411.
That run began on June 29 after Hunter x Hunter had gone without a new chapter for approximately 18 months.
Chapter 420 is therefore another important milestone for fans who had been waiting for the story to continue.
But the ending notice makes it clear that readers shouldn't immediately expect Chapter 421 next week.
Chapter 421 Has No Release Date
The final page of the latest chapter states that the next publication date will be announced once it has been decided.
That means there is currently no official return date for Chapter 421.
Importantly, Hunter x Hunter is no longer published under the old weekly serialization system. Shueisha previously confirmed that the manga would continue in a format other than weekly serialization because of creator Yoshihiro Togashi's health circumstances.
So this isn't simply another ordinary weekly hiatus announcement.
The publication schedule is now determined separately.
But Togashi Has Already Finished Chapter 427
Here's where things get interesting.
Even though Chapter 421 has no announced publication date, Togashi has continued providing progress updates on his work.
On September 1, he reported that the manuscript for Chapter 427 was complete.
So there are already several completed chapters beyond the one fans have just read.
That doesn't mean those chapters are about to be published immediately, but it does give fans something positive to hold onto during the uncertainty surrounding the next release.
Hunter x Hunter Has Also Hit a Huge Milestone
While Chapter 420 was being released, Hunter x Hunter also reached another major milestone.
The manga has now surpassed 100 million copies in cumulative circulation, including digital editions.
The milestone was reached with the release of Volume 39 in July.
After beginning publication in 1998, the series has now crossed the 100-million mark despite its irregular publication history.
That's a remarkable achievement for a series that has spent significant periods away from Weekly Shonen Jump.
What Happens Next?
The immediate future of Hunter x Hunter is uncertain.
The story remains deep inside the Succession War, with Kurapika, the princes of Kakin, the Phantom Troupe and other factions continuing their complicated battles of strategy aboard the Black Whale.
Now Hisoka and Tserriednich have crossed paths.
And with so many unfinished conflicts surrounding them, Chapter 420 may have created even more questions than it answered.
For now, fans have Chapter 420, confirmation that Togashi has completed work through Chapter 427, and one frustrating piece of information:
Chapter 421's publication date is still unknown.
