Tōyō has barely arrived in the capital, and Hyakuyofu Season 3 has already thrown her into trouble.
The third season, officially titled Hyakuyofu Season 3: Keishi-hen, began airing on October 7, bringing Tōyō and her travelling companions to Keishi as they continue searching for the lost Hyakuyōfu.
The first episode is titled “Nenka (Part 1)”.
And the journey starts with stolen money, a mysterious man and a kidnapping.
A New City, Same Tōyō
Tōyō, Moya and their companions have reached Keishi, the capital.
Their objective hasn't changed: they are still searching for the lost Hyakuyōfu.
But before they can properly settle into the city, Tōyō finds herself in a gambling house.
And, surprisingly, she wins a large amount of money.
It sounds like a perfect start.
It isn't.
A thief steals the money almost immediately.
Tōyō's newly acquired fortune disappears just as quickly as it arrived.
That's when a mysterious man named Fūmuraku enters the story.
He catches the thief and recovers the stolen money.
But instead of simply thanking him and moving on, Tōyō notices something strange about him.
As Fūmuraku walks away, she sees the form of a certain yōkai behind him.
And suddenly, the mysterious stranger becomes much more interesting.
Tōyō Sees Something Others Don't
This is exactly the sort of situation that makes Tōyō different from an ordinary doctor.
She doesn't simply treat physical problems.
Her ability allows her to hear the inner voices of her patients, helping her understand the feelings hidden beneath their appearances.
So when she sees a yōkai behind Fūmuraku, it is difficult to believe that the encounter is meaningless.
The man may have caught the thief.
He may even appear to have helped Tōyō.
But there is clearly something about him that has caught her attention.
And the series isn't revealing the answer yet.
Instead, it is letting Tōyō follow the mystery naturally.
Then Everything Goes Wrong Again
After recovering their money, Tōyō and the others sit down for a meal.
For a brief moment, the situation appears to have calmed down.
It hasn't.
A disturbance suddenly breaks out inside the establishment.
Before Tōyō can properly understand what is happening, she is taken hostage.
That's where the first episode leaves the situation.
Tōyō has gone from winning money to losing it, meeting a mysterious man and then becoming a hostage — all shortly after arriving in Keishi.
For someone who is supposed to be searching for a lost book, the journey is already becoming unnecessarily complicated.
Who Is Fūmuraku?
One of the most interesting additions to the new season is Fūmuraku.
He isn't introduced through a long explanation.
Instead, the story gives Tōyō a reason to notice him.
He catches the thief.
He leaves.
Tōyō sees something strange behind him.
And that is enough to create a question.
The character is voiced by Kazuhiro Nakaya in the Japanese version, joining returning cast members including Nao Toyama as Tōyō, Ayumu Murase as Moya and Kengo Kawanishi as Yanagikōji.
Nakaya has described the series as having a distinctive appeal in its portrayal of relationships between humans and yōkai.
That makes Fūmuraku someone worth watching as the new arc develops.
The Capital Changes the Journey
The move to Keishi is important because Hyakuyofu is once again changing the environment around Tōyō.
The series has always been built around travelling from place to place and encountering different yōkai.
But the capital offers something different.
There are more people.
More distractions.
More secrets.
And potentially far more complicated relationships between humans and yōkai.
Tōyō's search for the Hyakuyōfu is therefore taking her into a setting where simply identifying a yōkai may not be enough.
She may also have to figure out who is hiding them.
A Mystery That Has Only Started
The first episode doesn't attempt to solve everything.
Instead, it establishes the pieces.
Tōyō is searching for the lost Hyakuyōfu.
Fūmuraku appears at exactly the right moment.
Tōyō sees a yōkai connected to him.
Then she is kidnapped.
That sequence makes the opening chapter feel less like a straightforward new adventure and more like the beginning of a mystery.
And because the episode is titled “Nenka (Part 1),” the story is clearly not finished yet.
The next part should reveal more about what happened inside the restaurant and why Tōyō became the target.
The Journey Continues
Hyakuyofu Season 3 has officially moved the story into its Keishi arc, and the first episode wastes no time giving Tōyō another problem to solve.
The lost Hyakuyōfu remains the ultimate goal.
But before Tōyō can find it, she may have to understand the mysterious yōkai she encountered — and survive whatever comes next.
The first chapter has already left her in the hands of her kidnappers.
Now the question is simple:
Who took Tōyō, and what do they want from her?
