The debate over the strongest swordsman in One Piece has become much more complicated during the Final Saga.

For years, the answer appeared deceptively simple.

Dracule Mihawk is the World's Strongest Swordsman.

That title has been attached to Mihawk since his introduction, and it is one of the most important pieces of Zoro's ultimate goal.

But the Final Saga has introduced new information that makes the ranking far more interesting.

Shanks continues to demonstrate terrifying Haki and swordsmanship.

Roronoa Zoro has unlocked Supreme King Haki and learned to coat his attacks with it.

Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro has revealed himself as an extremely dangerous swordsman carrying one of the legendary Kitetsu blades.

Kozuki Oden's past has also become increasingly relevant as the story digs deeper into the history of Wano, Elbaf, Roger and the Void Century.

And now that the manga has reached the latest stages of the Elbaf Arc, it is time to revisit the ranking.

This list is based primarily on:

• confirmed canon feats,
• explicit titles and statements,
• demonstrated Haki,
• actual sword battles,
• portrayal by the story,
• and the character's overall combat ability.

It is not based solely on bounty numbers.

It is also important to distinguish between being a swordsman and simply using a sword.

That distinction becomes extremely important when discussing characters such as Law, Fujitora and some of the Five Elders.

How This Ranking Works

Before getting into the list, there is one rule.

A character does not automatically become a better swordsman simply because they are extremely powerful.

For example, a character may possess a Devil Fruit, supernatural ability or other fighting technique that makes them stronger overall.

This ranking focuses on characters whose combat identity is substantially connected to swordsmanship.

That is why some powerful sword users are treated differently from characters whose swords are simply one component of a much broader fighting style.

The ranking also considers a character's best demonstrated version where appropriate.

That means historical figures such as Oden are ranked according to the level they demonstrated during their prime rather than being excluded because they are no longer alive.

10. Vista

Current Ranking: #10

Vista is one of the most underrated swordsmen in the entire series.

The commander of the Whitebeard Pirates' Fifth Division has never received the same amount of attention as Zoro, Mihawk or Shanks.

But his Marineford performance deserves serious respect.

Vista was one of the few characters who could directly engage Dracule Mihawk with his swords without immediately being overwhelmed.

During the Marineford War, Mihawk launched an attack toward Luffy, and Vista intercepted him.

The two swordsmen exchanged attacks before the battle was interrupted.

The important detail is not that Vista defeated Mihawk.

He obviously did not.

The important detail is that Mihawk recognized him as a legitimate swordsman.

Their confrontation was postponed rather than resolved.

That places Vista comfortably above ordinary New World swordsmen.

Evidence: Marineford

The confrontation occurs during the Marineford War.

Vista blocks Mihawk's attack and engages the World's Strongest Swordsman in combat.

The anime adaptation depicts their confrontation during the Marineford episodes covering Mihawk's attempt to test Luffy.

Vista's ability to remain composed against Mihawk is one of the strongest pieces of evidence for his ranking.

Why He Is Not Higher

The problem is simple.

We have not seen enough from Vista.

He has never received the extended individual fight that characters like Zoro, Oden or Shanks have received.

His portrayal is excellent.

His feats are limited.

That keeps him at #10.

9. Shiryu

Current Ranking: #9

Shiryu is one of the most dangerous swordsmen in the Blackbeard Pirates.

Before joining Blackbeard, Shiryu was the chief jailer of Impel Down.

His reputation was already terrifying before he obtained the Suke Suke no Mi, the Devil Fruit that allows him to become invisible.

That combination makes Shiryu particularly dangerous.

He does not need to defeat an opponent through swordsmanship alone.

He can use invisibility to create openings for lethal attacks.

And that makes him one of the most dangerous sword users remaining in the Final Saga.

Evidence: Impel Down and Hachinosu

Shiryu's introduction establishes him as a highly dangerous swordsman whose brutality was so extreme that he was imprisoned by the World Government.

After joining Blackbeard, he became one of the crew's Ten Titanic Captains.

During the Hachinosu conflict, Shiryu demonstrated another important trait:

He is willing to fight dishonorably if doing so gives him an advantage.

That matters.

A swordsman does not necessarily have to fight according to Zoro's code of honor.

Shiryu is the opposite.

His invisibility makes his swordsmanship considerably harder to defend against.

Why He Is Not Higher

Shiryu has not yet demonstrated a battle on the level of Mihawk, Shanks or Zoro.

His greatest upcoming test will likely come when the Straw Hats finally clash directly with the Blackbeard Pirates.

Until then, placing him above Zoro or Nusjuro would require too much speculation.

8. Issho — Fujitora

Current Ranking: #8

Fujitora is one of the most powerful sword users in the Marines.

But there is an important distinction here.

Fujitora's strength does not come from swordsmanship alone.

His Zushi Zushi no Mi allows him to manipulate gravity on an enormous scale.

That means ranking him among swordsmen is complicated.

Nevertheless, his sword is a central component of his combat style.

And his overall strength is undeniable.

Evidence: Dressrosa

During the Dressrosa Arc, Fujitora demonstrated extraordinary control over his Devil Fruit while simultaneously fighting with his sword.

His gravitational abilities allowed him to summon enormous objects from the sky and manipulate the battlefield.

He also fought Trafalgar Law and later clashed with other major fighters.

The anime's Dressrosa episodes make it clear that Fujitora is operating at an entirely different level from ordinary sword users.

Why He Is Not Higher

The reason is not lack of power.

It is classification.

If we ranked every powerful character who uses a sword, Fujitora could potentially move much higher.

But this list focuses more heavily on dedicated swordsmanship.

Fujitora's Devil Fruit is too important to his overall combat style to treat him as a pure swordsman.

7. Silvers Rayleigh

Current Ranking: #7

Rayleigh is one of the most difficult characters to rank because his prime is largely legendary.

The former right-hand man of Gol D. Roger was known as the Dark King.

Even in old age, Rayleigh demonstrated extraordinary combat ability.

Evidence: Sabaody

During the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, an elderly Rayleigh confronted Kizaru.

That alone is an extraordinary feat.

Rayleigh was able to intercept Kizaru and prevent him from reaching the Straw Hats.

He fought the Admiral with his sword and Haki.

The anime adaptation expanded this confrontation significantly, showing just how capable Rayleigh remained despite his age.

Evidence: Amazon Lily

Rayleigh later demonstrated his enormous mastery of Haki when he intervened against the Marines and demonstrated advanced applications of Haki.

His presence alone was enough to make Blackbeard reconsider the situation at Amazon Lily.

Why He Is Not Higher

The biggest problem is age.

Prime Rayleigh could have been considerably stronger than the version we currently see.

But because the strongest version of Rayleigh is largely based on historical portrayal rather than an extended modern battle, placing him above Mihawk or Shanks would require assumptions.

That keeps him at #7.

6. Kozuki Oden

Current Ranking: #6

Oden is one of the strongest swordsmen the series has ever introduced.

His greatest achievement was not simply defeating powerful opponents.

It was the level at which he fought them.

Evidence: Whitebeard

Oden joined the Whitebeard Pirates and eventually became one of Whitebeard's closest companions.

During his first encounter with Whitebeard, the two exchanged attacks.

Oden's strength impressed Whitebeard enough for him to invite Oden to join his crew.

The anime adaptation's Oden flashback shows just how physically powerful Oden was.

Evidence: Roger

Oden later joined the Roger Pirates for their final voyage.

During the encounter between Roger and Whitebeard, Oden was present when two of the strongest pirates in history clashed.

This period is covered in the anime around Episodes 965–968.

Those episodes are especially important because they show Oden operating among Roger and Whitebeard's crews.

Evidence: Kaido

Oden's greatest individual feat may be his battle against Kaido.

Oden managed to cut Kaido deeply enough to leave the permanent scar that Kaido still carries.

That feat is enormous.

Very few characters have permanently damaged Kaido.

Oden did it with his swords.

Oden's feats are extraordinary, but he ultimately lost to Kaido.

His story also ended decades before the current Final Saga.

That makes it difficult to place him above characters who are actively demonstrating new abilities in the present timeline.

Current Ranking: #5

Nusjuro is where the ranking becomes extremely interesting.

The Five Elders were initially presented primarily as political figures.

Egghead changed that.

Nusjuro revealed himself as a terrifying swordsman.

His appearance during the Egghead Incident demonstrated that his swordsmanship is on a completely different level from ordinary government agents.

And then he encountered Zoro.

Evidence: Egghead

Nusjuro attempted to attack the Thousand Sunny.

Zoro intercepted him.

This confrontation is particularly important because the two characters recognized something significant about each other's swords.

Both possess Kitetsu blades.

Nusjuro's sword has been identified as Shodai Kitetsu, one of the legendary Kitetsu swords.

That puts his weapon in direct thematic opposition to Zoro's Sandai Kitetsu.

The encounter also confirmed that Nusjuro possesses Supreme King Haki.

That is a major revelation.

Why This Matters

Zoro has spent years developing his relationship with the cursed Kitetsu sword.

Now he has encountered someone carrying what appears to be an older and far more prestigious member of that sword lineage.

We still have not received a complete, extended sword duel between Nusjuro and Zoro.

This is where Zoro's development becomes impossible to ignore.

And the latest Final Saga revelations have only strengthened his case.

Zoro's progression can be measured through specific battles.

East Blue

Zoro established himself as an elite swordsman during his early battles against opponents such as Hatchan and Mr. 1.

His victory over Daz Bones was especially important because Zoro learned to cut steel.

That moment demonstrated that Zoro's swordsmanship was evolving beyond brute strength.

Enies Lobby

Against Kaku, Zoro developed Ashura, dramatically increasing his offensive power.

The fight showed that Zoro was capable of defeating a highly trained government assassin through swordsmanship and Haki-like spiritual pressure.

Thriller Bark

Zoro's willingness to sacrifice himself for Luffy demonstrated his character.

But his combat abilities also continued to develop.

His encounter with Ryuma further connected him to the legacy of legendary swordsmen.

Wano

Wano changed everything.

Zoro received Enma, the sword once wielded by Oden.

The weapon forced Zoro to control enormous amounts of Haki.

This became one of the most important steps in his development.

Rooftop Battle

Zoro fought alongside Luffy, Law, Kid and Killer against Kaido and Big Mom.

That is an elite group of opponents.

Zoro's Asura attack managed to permanently scar Kaido.

Zoro later fought King, Kaido's right-hand man.

The Final Saga has continued pushing Zoro into battles involving increasingly important characters.

His confrontation with Nusjuro is particularly significant because it connects Zoro directly to one of the Five Elders and another wielder of a Kitetsu blade.

Why Zoro Is #4

Zoro is not yet above Mihawk.

That is the entire point of his journey.

But he has already reached a level where he belongs in the conversation.

The next stage of his story is almost certainly going to involve proving that he can surpass the man who currently holds the title he has spent his entire life pursuing.

Current Ranking: #3

Now we reach the most controversial position.

Mihawk is officially the World's Strongest Swordsman.

So why is he not automatically #1?

Because this ranking is measuring the overall combat evidence available in the Final Saga, while also respecting Mihawk's official title.

And there is one character whose demonstrated Haki feats make the comparison extremely complicated.

That character is Shanks.

Still, Mihawk cannot be pushed out of the top three.

Evidence: His Title

The most important evidence is simple:

Mihawk is the World's Strongest Swordsman.

That is not a fan nickname.

It is an established title.

Zoro's dream is specifically to surpass Mihawk and become the World's Strongest Swordsman.

That means Mihawk represents the ceiling of swordsmanship that Zoro is trying to reach.

Evidence: Marineford

Mihawk demonstrated enormous power at Marineford.

His famous long-range slash toward Whitebeard's forces showed the incredible cutting power behind his swordsmanship.

He later fought Vista, one of Whitebeard's strongest commanders.

The battle was not completed, but Mihawk remained calm throughout the confrontation.

Evidence: Black Blade

Mihawk possesses Yoru, one of the strongest blades in the world.

The sword is also a permanent Black Blade.

That is an extremely important detail for Zoro's future.

Zoro's journey toward creating a permanent Black Blade may therefore be connected to his eventual attempt to surpass Mihawk.

Why Mihawk Is Not Automatically #1

Because Shanks exists.

Shanks uses a sword.

His most spectacular attacks are performed through his sword.

And his Haki feats are among the greatest ever shown.

Therefore, the question becomes:

Does Mihawk's title mean he is stronger than Shanks overall, or only that he is the superior swordsman?

The manga has intentionally left enough room for debate that readers continue arguing about it.

But when it comes specifically to swordsmanship, Mihawk's title remains decisive.

Current Ranking: #2

Shanks is arguably the most terrifying Haki user among the active pirates.

And his swordsmanship is inseparable from that power.

His sword is Gryphon.

His fighting style revolves heavily around Haki-enhanced sword attacks.

And the Final Saga has given us one of the clearest demonstrations of just how devastating that combination can be.

Shanks vs. Kid Changed the Conversation

In Chapter 1079, Shanks confronted Eustass Kid.

Kid had become significantly stronger during the Wano Arc.

He had survived battles against Big Mom and awakened his Devil Fruit.

Yet Shanks ended the confrontation almost immediately.

He used Divine Departure.

The attack overwhelmed Kid and effectively ended the battle in one decisive strike.

Mihawk's reputation existed long before the current Final Saga.

The two were once famous rivals whose duels were known throughout the Grand Line.

Even Whitebeard's crew was aware of the rivalry.

His Marineford Performance

Mihawk was able to cut through enormous distances with his sword.

His slash toward Whitebeard's forces demonstrated extraordinary range and power.

He also fought Vista without showing fear or desperation.

Cross Guild

Even after the dissolution of the Seven Warlords system, Mihawk remains one of the world's most dangerous pirates.

His involvement with Cross Guild has placed him alongside Buggy and Crocodile, although Mihawk's personal strength remains far beyond what Buggy's public reputation suggests.

That is an enormous feat.

But Mihawk's entire narrative position is built around being the World's Strongest Swordsman.

That means there are two different questions:

Who has shown the most spectacular recent combat feat?

Shanks has an extremely strong argument.

Who is officially established as the strongest swordsman?

Mihawk.

Those are not necessarily the same question.

And that distinction is important when discussing One Piece.

The most important person in this debate may actually be neither Mihawk nor Shanks.

It is Zoro.

Oda is surrounding Zoro with increasingly important swordsmen.

Zoro currently carries three swords:

• Wado Ichimonji
• Sandai Kitetsu
• Enma

Nusjuro possesses Shodai Kitetsu.

That creates an obvious connection.

Zoro carries the third generation.

If the story eventually reveals more about the Kitetsu blades, Zoro could discover another important part of his swordsmanship heritage.

And because Mihawk possesses a permanent Black Blade, Zoro's eventual creation of his own Black Blade could become another major step toward his final goal.

The latest Elbaf developments make one thing clear:

The world's strongest fighters are becoming increasingly connected to swordsmanship.

Nusjuro is a swordsman.

Gaban's involvement also demonstrates that the older generation of legendary fighters is still relevant, although Gaban should not be included in a strict swordsmanship ranking because his primary weapon is an axe.

Scopper Gaban

Uses a sword, but his Devil Fruit is fundamental to his fighting style.

Gol D. Roger

Edward Newgate

Used a bisento rather than a conventional sword.

King

Uses a sword at times, but swordsmanship is not his primary fighting identity.

Imu

The latest Elbaf material has shown Imu using weapons including a sword, but Imu should not automatically be classified as a traditional swordsman.

This is the most important disclaimer.

One Piece is not finished.

The Final Saga is actively changing what we know about these characters.

Mihawk has still not received his definitive final battle.

Shanks continues to reveal new abilities.

Zoro's ultimate battle against Mihawk has not happened.

Nusjuro has only recently been placed directly into Zoro's path.

And the story continues to reveal fighters from Roger's generation.

That means this ranking is best understood as a snapshot of the current canon, not a prediction of where every character will ultimately finish.

The funniest thing about ranking One Piece swordsmen is that the closer the story gets to its ending, the harder the ranking becomes.

Mihawk still has the title.

Shanks has some of the most terrifying Haki feats in the entire manga.

Zoro is rapidly approaching the level required to challenge the world's greatest swordsman.

Nusjuro has suddenly entered the conversation with a legendary Kitetsu blade and Supreme King Haki.

Oden remains one of the greatest swordsmen the series has ever shown.

And characters such as Rayleigh, Shiryu and Vista demonstrate that the world is filled with elite sword users outside the Straw Hats.

But one thing remains clear.

Zoro's journey has entered its final stage.

He is no longer simply trying to become strong.

He is approaching the point where he has to prove that he can stand alongside the greatest swordsmen in history.

And eventually, he has to surpass one man.

Dracule Mihawk.

Until that happens, the title of World's Strongest Swordsman remains Mihawk's.
