Baki Is Going Isekai With Retsu Kaioh

The Baki franchise is doing something nobody probably expected from one of anime's most famous martial arts series.

Retsu Kaioh is going isekai.

The Baki spin-off manga Baki Gaiden: Retsu Kaioh Doesn't Mind Getting Isekai'd has officially been announced as a TV anime adaptation, with TMS Entertainment handling animation production.

The anime is planned for 2027, although an exact premiere date has not been announced yet.

Retsu Is Dead — But Not Finished

The premise sounds completely ridiculous until you remember that this is Baki.

Retsu Kaioh, the legendary Chinese kenpo master, dies following his battle with Musashi Miyamoto in Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai.

But instead of his story ending there, Retsu wakes up in an entirely different world.

And this isn't another martial-arts tournament.

It's a full-blown fantasy world filled with swords, magic and monsters.

Naturally, Retsu has only one thing on his mind:

Prove that Chinese martial arts are the strongest.

Baki Meets Isekai

The concept is essentially what happens when one of Baki's most powerful martial artists is dropped into a fantasy RPG.

Retsu doesn't suddenly abandon his fighting style because he's in another world.

Instead, he takes everything he knows about Chinese martial arts and attempts to apply it against enemies that are completely different from the opponents he faced in the Baki world.

That means swordsmen, magical creatures and monsters now have to deal with a fighter who has spent his entire life mastering his body.

The result is exactly as chaotic as it sounds.

Why Retsu Was Chosen

Retsu has always been one of the more popular characters in Baki.

He isn't simply another strong fighter.

His dedication to Chinese martial arts gives him a distinct fighting philosophy, while his battles against characters such as Baki, Katsumi Orochi and Pickle helped establish him as one of the franchise's most memorable competitors.

His death in the main story was therefore a major moment.

The spin-off effectively asks:

What if Retsu's martial-arts journey didn't end with his death?

Instead of bringing him back into the original Baki storyline, the manga sends him somewhere completely different.

TMS Entertainment Is Back

TMS Entertainment will produce the anime.

The studio has already worked extensively on the Baki franchise, including the previous Baki, Baki Hanma and Baki-Dou anime projects.

That makes TMS a natural choice for this unusual spin-off.

The production team has not yet revealed the full cast or complete staff lineup, so more information is expected as the 2027 release approaches.

The Manga Is Still Going

The spin-off manga began serialization in 2020 in Monthly Shōnen Champion.

The story was created from an original concept by Keisuke Itagaki, with Sai Ihara handling the story and Eiji Mutsui providing the artwork.

The manga's popularity has also been strong enough to pass 2 million copies in circulation.

Its 17th volume is scheduled for release in September 2026.

So the anime isn't adapting an obscure side story that nobody knows.

There is already a substantial audience waiting to see Retsu's bizarre new adventure animated.

This Could Be Baki's Wildest Anime Yet

Baki has already given viewers underground tournaments, prehistoric warriors, legendary swordsmen, assassins and some of the most absurd martial-arts techniques in anime.

Now it's adding an isekai fantasy world to the list.

The funniest part is that Retsu probably doesn't care.

To him, the setting doesn't matter.

If there is someone strong enough to fight, he'll fight them.

If there's a monster, he'll study how it moves.

If there's magic, he'll probably try to defeat it with Chinese kenpo.

That is exactly why the spin-off has such an entertaining premise.

When Does the Baki Isekai Anime Release?

Baki Gaiden: Retsu Kaioh Doesn't Mind Getting Isekai'd is scheduled for 2027.

No exact release date, streaming platform or complete cast has been announced yet.

For now, fans have the first teaser and confirmation that TMS Entertainment is producing the series.

And honestly, one question is already impossible to ignore:
